The first [[Stars 2000 National Academic Tournament]] was won by [[1989 Irmo|Irmo]] against a 17-team field, by defeating [[1989 St. Joseph's|St. Joseph's]] 464-214 in the final. A $10,000 prize was awarded to the champion team, and the top four teams' schools received IBM computers.

Third place was [[1989 Niceville|Niceville]] from Florida, and fourth was [[1989 Granville|Granville]] of Ohio.

[[1989 Caldwell|Caldwell]] of Kentucky, the [[1989 PAC|Panasonic]] champions [[1989 Winston Churchill (MD)|Winston Churchill]] of Maryland, and [[1989 Booker T. Washington|Booker T. Washington]] also participated in this tournament.

Delta Airlines, IBM and Radisson Hotels were listed as sponsors.

428 teams were involved in the preliminary computer round, and the top 17 went to the Radisson in Lexington for regular matches to determine the champion on May 14, 1989.
