The 2006 Francis Howell Central team experienced a revival of Francis Howell Central's fortunes after the slump of the past several years. The team not only placed highly at several tournaments, but received an infusion of fresh talent.
Season History
At the 2005 Two Saints Conference, the 2006 Francis Howell Central Varsity team captained by Max LaFoy and led by Peter Creedon and Josh Mugler in scoring took second, while the Junior Varsity team took third, with team high scorer Charles Hang becoming Two Saints Junior Varsity Top Scorer. The Varsity team also took second at the 2006 Warrenton Tournament and third at the Washington Tournament, and placed in the Top 16 at WUHSAC VIII. In post-season play, the team won the 2006 Gateway Athletic Conference and took second in its MSHSAA district despite the absence of rising star Charles Hang, who had begun playing on the Varsity team in the Spring. Given that the Fort Zumwalt West team which defeated Francis Howell Central on the last question at Districts went on to take fourth at State, it's interesting to speculate how the team might have done at State competition.
The 2005-2006 season was also noteworthy for the arrival of several freshmen from the Scholar Quiz Team of Saeger Middle School, including Hang. The talents of these freshmen were immediately apparent in 2005-2006 when led the team which took 3rd place in the Junior Varsity Division of the 2005 Two Saints Conference. Several of these players--Nick LaFoy, Charles Hang, Lucas Vicars, and Kevin Robb--would be the backbone of the Francis Howell Central team for the next few years and three of them--Hang, Robb, and Vicars--would anchor the 2009 team which tied for 27th at the 2009 NAQT HSNCT.
