Bruce Lou was a player at UC Berkeley, class of '19; he previously attended Saratoga High School. He is best known for his achievements in History Bowl, as he did not start playing Quiz Bowl until 2014; however, he has won several notable titles in both.
Career
High school
Bruce first entered national prominence when he won the 2014 US History Bee, where he faced off against Sameer Rai in the finals. Interestingly, both competitors only competed at the continued insistence of Ankit Aggarwal. In addition, Bruce led the Saratoga team to 2nd place in the 2014 National History Bowl, where they lost to LASA in the finals. That year, he also attended his second quiz bowl tournament ever, the 2014 NASAT, where he was the top scorer on a 3rd place Team California of him, Kevin Wang, Hidehiro Anto, and Aseem Keyal.
In 2015, Bruce led Saratoga to the national title in the Bowl, defeating LASA on the last tossup of a rematch of the previous year's final. Lou also performed the first-ever clean sweep of the NHBB, placing first in the National History Bee and National History Bowl, as well as first in the US History Bee for the second consecutive time. He played at the 2015 PACE NSC as a solo team, placing 27th. He also participated in the 2015 NASAT, where he was once again the top scorer on a 1st place Team California of him, Kevin Wang, Justin Nghiem, and Kion You.
He was named a member of the Second Team for the 2015 HSQBRank All-World Teams.
College
Bruce was a member of the consistently top bracket Berkeley team under Aseem Keyal, which placed t-10 at 2016 ICT, 7th at 2016 ACF Nationals, 7th at 2017 ICT, and 8th at 2017 ACF Nats.
In 2018, Bruce was on the Berkeley team placed 2nd at the 2018 ICT by winning the first round of an advantaged final against Yale before taking a 80-635 loss. He was also part of that year's 7th place team at ACF Nats.
Writing
Bruce wrote for IAC for two years, culminating in the events of the 2016 IHO, in which Bruce and other writers were forced to write questions in a room in Hawaii while other staffers played basketball [1].
Bruce was the history editor for Cal's Mid-Spring Tournament.
Bruce was also history editor for 2016 ACF Fall, where he was very critical of the quality of submissions and the prospects of packet-sub [2].
