Stanford University is a private university in Stanford, CA.

Written Tournaments

During the 1990s and 2000s, the Stanford team regularly produced the Cardinal Classic set, with the last incarnation being produced in 2009. In 2016, spearheaded by the writing efforts of Stephen Liu, Austin Brownlow, and Benji Nguyen, the Stanford team wrote a very well-received nationals-prep set entitled "stanford housewrite". The set was run at various sites across the country including Stanford and Maryland, the latter of which attracted a highly competitive field not much unlike an average Chicago Open field. The name of the set was inspired by a placeholder title that Brownlow had scrawled across a whiteboard in the Stanford team's practice room, and was intended a tongue-in-cheek criticism of tortured acronyms like STIMPY and MYSTERIUM.

Tournament Results

Stanford's 1978 team that won the first College Bowl NCT.

Stanford's only championship in the modern era was an ACF Nationals title in 2010, achieved by a team led by Andrew Yaphe.

In the 2012-2013 school year, a Stanford A team led by Benji Nguyen went undefeated in every tournament at which it played (ACF Fall in November, IFT Mirror in November, SCT DII in February, ICT DII in April, and MUT in May) except for ACF Nationals (though they went undefeated in their playoff bracket).

The team experienced a great resurgence beginning in the 2014-2015 season, with the addition of incoming graduate students Stephen Liu and Austin Brownlow, along with freshmen Nathan Weiser, Alex Freed, Tabitha Walker, and Jialin Ding. Stanford A placed second, and was the highest-finishing collegiate team, at that year's nationals-prep event, George Oppen. The team went on to finish 5th at the 2015 ICT and 4th at the 2015 ACF Nationals, where it delivered a key loss to a highly-lauded Virginia team that was coming off of an ICT championship. Both finishes were Stanford's best since 2010. Meanwhile, Stanford B finished 3rd in Division II at ICT and captured the undergraduate championship at Nationals.

Stanford A reached even greater heights during the 2015-2016 season, finishing 3rd at both national events with key victories over Chicago and Maryland at each.
