The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) began awarding state titles for academic bowl in 1990.
The tournament is annually held at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla. on the first Saturday in February. In 2009, OSSAA shifted the classifications, dropping Class B and adding 6A.
Question Quality
The tournaments have historically been plagued by weak writing and inconsistency.[1] At least one question classified as "Literature" was on Tim Tebow's autobiography and some 40-question rounds only featured one Fine Arts question.[2]
In the past, the majority of strong Oklahoma teams did not contest the tournament, choosing instead to play in NAQT tournaments. Because OSSAA events have had some degree of monetary prizes awarded, however, many schools in the state still compete in them.
