:The radio deal with CBS ended after 1982. They had a one-year TV show with NBC in 1984 and on Disney in 1987; the only tournament held in between was a reduced 1986 NCT with four teams. College Bowl paid to operate the NCT out of its own pocket (that is, they sought their own sponsors and it didn't charge teams or use ACUI resources like at lower levels) so it's definitely some form of "they didn't want to take a loss on it without a potential new broadcast partner involved," but I haven't been able to find any more specifics (including in looking for articles on the cancellation of the 1983 tournament that might mention the other regional winners).

I don't know that that's true about the format not changing--in 2007 I seem to recall playing a single-elim bracket with the top four teams, possibly followed by a best-of-three finals. --Rob Carson (talk) 02:02, 3 May 2014 (PDT)

Yeah, I think I do remember hearing about that -- should find out what year they implemented it. Matt Weiner (talk) 04:08, 3 May 2014 (PDT)

Years in which the tournament was not held

Is the reason known? Printable? If so, that seems like good material for the article. —Jonah (talk) 15:36, 30 December 2022 (CST)

The radio deal with CBS ended after 1982.
