Years in which the tournament was not held

The radio deal with CBS ended after 1982. They had a one-year TV show with NBC in 1984 and on Disney in 1987; the only tournament held in between was a reduced 1986 NCT with four teams. College Bowl paid to operate the NCT out of its own pocket (that is, they sought their own sponsors and it didn't charge teams or use ACUI resources like at lower levels) so it's definitely some form of "they didn't want to take a loss on it without a potential new broadcast partner involved," but I haven't been able to find any more specifics (including in looking for articles on the cancellation of the 1983 tournament that might mention the other regional winners).

My news archives are limited from home since I only have what the public libraries I belong to offer, plus resources like the old quizbowl communication groups etc. which have almost no info on anything from before 1993 - when I can get into the VCU library and use the full databases and microfilm for research I might find more.
