Samuel "Sam" Lu is a player for Obra D. Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas. Sam was introduced to quiz bowl in his early junior year after Ryan Chen, the club president and captain for Tompkins at the time, was searching for someone who could help the school in the sciences and most other subjects.

In his 2020-2021 season, Sam has claimed to have made great progress in his quiz bowl knowledge by listening to podcasts and simply "paying attention during school". His real study methods remain unknown, but many have accepted the fact that his school curriculum has been one of his main study methods for quiz bowl. His efforts paid off for him at the 2021 HSNCT (the school's first HSNCT) where he was the leading scorer for his team, placing tied for 49th.

Sam is active on the HSQuizBowl Discord server where he constantly posts his thoughts about quiz bowl and often jokes around with others. Sam is also one of a few students who support computational math since according to Sam, it is a "subject that [he] is good at that many struggle on". In reality, Sam simply just likes math and hates to see his favorite subject out of quiz bowl. Sam also is a strong supporter of online quiz bowl due to the convenience of not traveling and generally opposes having to go long distances for quiz bowl tournaments especially non-national tournaments. He also cites online quiz bowl as the perfect solution to get more teams involved despite the 2021 HSNCT field saying otherwise. Despite Sam's strong generalism and specialty in the sciences, he has constantly expressed his hate for RMPSS (Religion, Mythology, Philosophy, and Social Sciences) since those subjects, according to Sam, are not part of his school curriculum.
