The University of Manchester is a large university located in the north of England. It has fielded a quizbowl team since quizbowl first came to the UK in the 1990s, although it only formally formed a quiz society in spring 2011 under the leadership of Tom Whyman. Manchester hosted the 2000 British Student Quiz Championships as well as a Briticised mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament in April 2011. Manchester won the 2002 British Student Quiz Championships, becoming the first university other than Oxford to do so.
Manchester has historically been successful on the BBC quiz show University Challenge and is tied with Magdalene College, Oxford and Imperial College London for most series wins, with 4 wins as of 2023. Their most recent win was in 2013. Manchester's University Challenge teams have been coached by librarian and Manchester alumnus, Stephen Pearson, since 1996.
