The original iteration of Trashtastrophe, sometimes retroactively stylized as Trashonestrophe, Trash1strophe, or T1, was a tossups-only set written and edited by Donohue and Geringer over the summer of 2009 for the purpose of raising money for the the cowriters and the Saint Viator program. After a brief tryout at Geringer's house featuring ex-players and non-quizbowlers, the Geringer Basement Open, the set was played as a sixteen-team doubles event following the conclusion of Loyola Academy's Ultima tournament on October 17th, 2009. It has been or will be mirrored at a number of sites, including OSU, Culver, and Bettendorf.

The second iteration, Trashtwostrophe, sometimes stylized at Trash2strophe or T2, was another tossups-only set written and edited by Donohue and Geringer, with significant contributions from Charles Martin, Kirun Sankaran, and others. After Dan's falling-out with the Saint Viator team, some of the proceeds went to Dan's PACE NSC fund. Although smaller than the original, the set received more praise for its somewhat increased difficulty and was originally played as a doubles event following the conclusion of Northern Illinois' 2010 Huskie Bowl on February 6th, 2010. It has been or will be mirrored at Bettendorf and UIUC.
