Chris Heffner was a quiz bowl player at Michigan State. He participated in Minnesota quiz bowl for his entire high school career at Wayzata, until he made the great jump over Wisconsin to MSU. He enjoyed questions on geography, current events, and politics, and was known to complain that all non-NAQT question sets have "too much literature." He later completed a PhD in linguistics at Maryland, where he did not play quiz bowl.
