Dr. John Barnes attended NC State and got his Ph.D. in Operations Research at Virginia Tech. He started teaching at Maggie Walker in 1997, teaching BC Calculus, Mathematical Modeling, and Linear Algebra, among other subjects.

Dr. Barnes began coaching in 2000 as a mandatory administrative sponsor, but quickly became one of the premier coaches in high school quizbowl. Paradoxically he is a libertarian but strictly follows every insignificant rule or procedure, notably the speed limit. His laid back, hands off, style is probably effective, as he has coached several nationally competitive teams. Dr. Barnes won the [[Benjamin Cooper]] award from [[PACE]] in 2006.
