The Sam Houston State University Academic Challenge was the de facto Texas state championship before the [[TQBA State Championship]]. All records seem to indicate that the program folded in 2011. The Academic challenge was created in 1992 and was inspired by the Texaco Academic Challenge (now known as the [[National Academic Tournament]]. During its entire run the Academic Challenge was hosted and organized by [[Sam Houston State]] faculty members. In later years the program was coordinated by Mitzi L. Mahoney, Associate Professor with the Sam Houston State Department of Political Science.
