Charlie Perkins (pictured, the one who isn't old) played a semester or two for William and Mary and was Honaker's Captain in 2010. He used to hold a bunch of high school records and led his team to the VHSL A-division championship game in 2010-- not a big deal to some, but Honaker also has about 500 students in a non-quizbowl-friendly part of rural Virginia. Due to their distance from what most call civilization, Honaker only started attending non-VHSL competitions in 2007, and only averages 2-3 weekend tournaments a year, most of which were housewritten. Honaker's small size also prevents a lot of the player specialization that larger and well-known programs have installed, so he was forced into a generalist role without the depth of the usual power players; four of his the five total power-answers in his NAQT career came as a sophomore and junior.

From 2008-2020, Perkins attended the VHSL State Tournament for 13 consecutive years as either a player (08-10), staffer (11, 12, 13, 15), coach (15-20), or spectator (2014 only). This streak was brought to an end as the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an online 2021 state tournament, though Honaker did qualify and play in the event.

Charlie Perkins is the former Head Coach at Honaker and currently serves as the team's Assistant Coach. During his tenure as Head Coach, Honaker has earned three VHSL state championships (2016, 2017, 2019) and one VHSL state runner-up (2018).

Playing career

Perkins was Honaker's captain in 2010, leading the team to its first of what would become four VHSL State Runner-Ups. In college, he played a semester or two for William and Mary.

He also led a one-off unofficial Honaker team under the name of "Robert Zimmerman High School" at a 2010 NAREN mirror in Concord, NC. They finished in 4th place out of 14 teams in a field which included teams like Raleigh Charter and Dorman. The event marked one of Honaker's first quizbowl tournament appearances in a field with nationally-renowned programs.

Perkins still competes in the occasional open and trash tournament, often using the names of former high schools in middle Appalachia like "Big Creek"[1] for pseudonyms.

Coaching career

Perkins served as a Group Coordinator of the VHSL State Tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2015, and also as a timekeeper at the 2011 tournament.

Since 2016, he has been one of the coaches spearheading SWATA, which brought quizbowl tournaments to the geographically isolated and essentially quizbowl-less area of deep Southwestern Virginia.
