A national championship is an event purporting to award a title to the best [[quizbowl]] team in a particular country. Over the years a number of national championships have been held for college, high school, and middle school levels of play, with widely varying formats and question quality. Only tournaments adhering to "[[good quizbowl]]" standards are considered legitimate.

*<nowiki>*</nowiki>While the Top Community College continued to be recognized at ICT since the launch of the CCCT in 2009, NAQT's website says the ICT team is "not considered a national champion" by NAQT. As of the 2015, recognition of the Top Community College at the ICT will no longer occur.

*<nowiki>**</nowiki>Walton won the last edition of the AAC in 1995. The tournament has been announced as returning in 2015.

*<nowiki>‡</nowiki>A sequel to CULT, [[COLT]], was run as [[Chicago Open Trash]] in 2011, but was not billed as a national championship.

*<nowiki>§</nowiki>NHBB recognizes the top middle school, top solo team, and top small school based on their final finish at the National History Bowl, but these are not generally considered 'national championships' per se, because they are rarely directly played off, among other reasons. Thus, they are not listed here. The actual championship for middle schools is a separate event held on the same weekend as the middle school History Bee and is listed above.
