[[Category:VHSL Regions from 2014]]

Latest revision as of 12:32, 15 July 2021

After the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Region 1A West was a VHSL region in Class 1A, consisting of schools with less than 475 students lying generally in the western half of the state (though some teams in 1A East actually lied geographically further west than teams in 1A West). It contained Conference 45, 46, 47, and 48, and in essence (with a few exceptions) was a combination of about half of the former members of VHSL's Group A Regions C and D.

In each of the 4 years of 1A West's existence, its champion either finished as the VHSL 1A State Champion or the State Runner-Up.

Following the 2018 VHSL Realignment, Region 1A West was split back up into regions 1C and 1D, creating similar (but smaller) versions of the former Group A Regions C and D. The reformatting of the playoffs added "Super Regions" in the classifications which opted for it; Class 1 (or 1A) opted in, and thus Super Region 1CD was created, essentially consisting of the same schools from the former 1A West. Region 1C and 1D held their own respective tournaments, with the Regional Champion and Runner-Up advancing to the Super Region 1CD Tournament.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Super Region 1CD Tournament was canceled, with Regions 1C and 1D instead opting to send their respective tournament champions directly to the VHSL Class 1 State Tournament.

Conferences had autonomy for selecting the seeds they sent to the regional tournament; thus the rules for qualifying varied. Ex. In Conference 47, the regular season champion gained the 1st seed ("Champion") in the 1A West Tournament, even if they did not finish in the Top 2 at the conference tournament, as was the case with Northwood in 2016.

After the 2014-2015 Scholastic Bowl season, Clintwood High School consolidated with nearby Haysi High School to form the 2A school Ridgeview; as a result, Conferences 47 and 48 lost one member, but that same year, Patrick Henry (Glade Spring, VA) moved into Conference 47.

Super Region 1CD (2018-present)

The 2018 VHSL Realignment essentially made district play optional, with the VHSL playoffs officially starting at the Regional level. For the most part, Region 1C represents the former Conferences 45 & 46, while Region 1D represents the former Conferences 47 and 48.

One notable difference during the Realignment was that Radford-- a perennial powerhouse in Region C-- experienced an increase in student enrollment, resulting in their move up to VHSL Class 2 for the 2018 season. At the same time, Grundy experienced a drop in enrollment, dropping into Class 1 from Class 2.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Super Region 1CD Tournament was canceled, with Regions 1C and 1D instead opting to send their respective tournament champions directly to the VHSL Class 1 State Tournament.
