The academic team at the school was founded in the late 1990s by Fred Campbel who would serve as the coach of the team until 2010 when he assumed the position of Commissioner of [[VHSL Scholastic Bowl|Scholastic Bowl]] for the Virginia High School League. The team is now coached by Jimmy Winterer.
