Liberty High School is a public school in Liberty, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City. The school won the Class 4 MSHSAA state title in 2003 and 2005, and placed second in Class 4 in 2001, 2004, and 2006. Liberty also won a pre-MSHSAA state title in 1993.
LHS was the only high school in the Liberty Public School District until fall 2010, when Liberty North opened.
Because of the state of quizbowl in Missouri at the time, Liberty rarely attended good quizbowl tournaments until about 2007 when they began attending some Missouri S&T tournaments, where alumnus Jeffrey Hill was enrolled. Liberty has also occasionally attended WUHSAC and tournaments at Missouri, as well as most of the few good tournaments in the Kansas City area. Liberty's presence in the growing good quizbowl circuit in Missouri has declined since the graduation of Spencer Fish in 2009.
Tournament Hosting
Liberty occasionally hosts tournaments. Through 2002 Liberty's tournaments used vendor-supplied questions that were short one-liners typical of quizbowl in Missouri at the time.
Liberty's Varsity and Junior Varsity tournaments from 2003-2005 were housewritten, edited by Kyle Hill in 2003 and Jeffrey Hill in 2004 and 2005. The housewritten tournaments included an attempt at some pyramidal questions but were still heavily influenced by MSHSAA-style quizbowl. The 2005 tournament was the largest, with 28 Varsity teams and 30 JV teams.
Liberty hosted another tournament in fall 2006 on questions from an unknown vendor, likely of poor quality.
Liberty hosted a mirror of the first iteration of DAFT on October 31, 2009, which was the first Missouri Quizbowl Alliance certified tournament in the Kansas City area and the first to be hosted by a high school.
In addition to its invitational tournaments, Liberty frequently hosts its MSHSAA District or the tournament for its division of the KC Suburban Conference.
