Chip apparently has a background in television and was the host of the Texaco Star National Academic Championship television program, which air on the Discovery Channel from 1989-1993. His name is often synonymous with QU's flagship tourament, the National Academic Championship, and Chip Beall himself has become representative of bad quizbowl as a whole. Chip grew up in Arkansas and played on his high school team. His daughter Ivon is also a Questions Unlimited employee.
