Matt Knupp coached Russell until a scandal forced him to resign his coaching position. During the 2009 Governor's Cup, he was accused of gaining an inappropriate advantage by having the team show up late and lying about the buses being stalled by bad weather. Knupp subsequently received a lifetime ban from KAAC competition, including as a spectator, but was able to keep his job as a math teacher.
