Revision as of 22:14, 2 June 2021
The 2009 MSHSAA State Championship was held on May 8-9, 2009. Classes 1 and 2 competed on Friday and Classes 3 and 4 played on Saturday. Questions for Districts and State were provided by Questions Galore.
Districts
Sixteen district tournaments in each of the four classes were held on April 18. There were previously eight districts in each class, but beginning this year the districts were divided in two and a best two-of-three sectionals round was added to the MSHSAA State series. This resulted in several districts of only two or three teams participating, and in at least one case a win-by-default as all other teams decided not to participate.
In addition to the halved districts, this is the first year that districts were scheduled for the afternoon, with preliminary rounds from 2-5 pm and the single-elimination finals from 6-8 pm. This change was made to avoid conflicts with the ACT, but in typical MSHSAA fashion, instead of conflicting with a test that was administered two weeks earlier and can also be taken at 5 other times during the year, it conflicted with several proms.
District championship scores are posted here
Sectionals
The Sectionals round was the first round of the state championship and took place on April 23. Sectionals consisted of best two-of-three matchups between the winners of two adjacent districts. The winner of each sectional advanced to the remaining rounds of the state championship.

Questions
As expected, the questions were terribly written and many times completely unanswerable.
Out of 900 possible points, Class 1 teams at the state finals averaged 169.85 points per game (172.71 in prelims), while Class 2 teams averaged 192.97 points per game (185.42 in prelims). This results in a combined average of 181.41 points per game, barely higher than the 2006 MSHSAA State Championship average of 179.69 points per game, making this the second lowest scoring Class 1/2 state tournament since at least 2004, probably ever. The 2009 prelim average of 179.06 ppg is lower than the 2006 prelim average of 184.16 ppg. [1]
Class 3 teams at the state finals averaged 219.53 points per game (215.42 in prelims), while Class 4 teams averaged 271.1 points per game (268.33 in prelims). This results in a combined average of 245.32 points per game, slightly higher than the 2006 average of 234.07 ppg, but lower than the 304.22 point average of the previous year's tournament (written by Shawn Pickrell). Like the smaller classes, this makes the 2009 tournament the second lowest scoring Class 3/4 state tournament since at least 2004 and probably all-time. The 2009 prelim average of 241.88 ppg is barely higher than the 2006 prelim average of 240.52 ppg.
