VHSL Region 1D will be part of VHSL's Class 1 (formerly known as 1A), consisting of schools with less than 475 students lying in the Southwest Virginia panhandle. It contains the Black Diamond District, Cumberland District, and the Hogoheegee District. With 15 member schools, it is the 2nd-largest Region in Class 1.
Region 1D (along with [[VHSL Region 2D]Region 2D]]) is essentially a bifurcated half of the former VHSL Region D, which from 1998-2013 included schools that are now classified in VHSL's groups 1A and 2A (under the combined "Group A" name). However, a noted change is the entry of the Hogoheegee District (or 'Hogo'), which was formerly a part of Region C. This change came partly because so many of the former Region D's member schools became 2A under the 2014 VHSL Realignment; in addition, Southwest Virginia as a whole has been undergoing a number of school consolidations in the last decade, resulting in fewer and fewer small schools that would fall under 1A.
Grundy will be entering 1A from 2A with the creation of Region 1D due to a drop in enrollment. From 2014-2017, they remained a member of the Black Diamond District, but district matches did not factor into Regional qualification.
Honaker is the only team in 1D to have appeared at the Regional level every year since Scholastic Bowl's creation in 1998; they are also the only team from 1D to have won a state runner-up or championship (of which they've done both 3 times each); the only other teams in 1D to make a state tournament appearance this decade are J.I. Burton (Norton, VA), Grundy (as a member of 2A), and Chilhowie, who have each appeared at the state level once.
