Revision as of 21:05, 2 April 2019
The 2018 MSHSAA State Championship was held on May 4-5, 2018. Classes 1 and 2 competed on Friday and Classes 3 and 4 played on Saturday.
Questions for Districts and State were provided by NAQT for the eighth year. The use of existing sets for some questions made IS-174 and IS-175A unavailable for use during the regular season in Missouri. 167A and 169A were also unavailable for standard invitationals, but was used for some conference tournaments that did not use NAQT's MSHSAA formatted conference set.

Sectionals

Records and Notes
- Michael Powers' total of 155 tossups answered correctly sets a new all-time record for most tossups in the 23 year history of the MSHSAA state championship, surpassing his record of 138 tossups the previous year.
- Michael Powers' 35 tossups in round 1 is believed to be a new single game record by an individual, topping the last known highest total (34) set by Ross Simmons the previous year.
- Michael Powers' 29 tossups in the championship game is a new record for most tossups correctly answered by an individual in any championship game, surpassing Max Schindler's 26 tossups in Class 4 in 2013. The previous known record in class 2 was Michael's 25 tossups the previous year.
- Louisiana set a new class 2 record for most points in a championship game with 490, breaking the previous record of 480 set by Richland in 2014.
- Louisiana tied the class 2 record for most points scored in any game with 590 in Round 3, matching Richland's score in a 2015 preliminary game.
- Louisiana's total of 2670 points sets a new Class 2 record, breaking Richland's record of 2285 in 2001. This total is the sixth highest to date in all classes behind only the Ladue teams of 2011-2014 and 2018 in Class 4.
- Samuel Lockwood's 136 tossups set a new Class 3 record, breaking the previous record of 117 held for 16 years by Melissa McCush of Savannah. This total is also the third most to date, behind only Michael Powers' 138 in 2017 and 155 the previous day.
- St. Joseph Central's total of 2470 points sets a new record for most points by a team that did not win its class, surpassing Thomas Jefferson's 2460 points in Class 1 in 2015.
- Due to the preliminary schedule being pre-determined based on sectional matchups, Lakeland's three opponents in the preliminary rounds were the only three schools in this year's Class 1 tournament that have previously won state championships, combining for 17 of the 22 previous championships. Those three schools had also finished in the top four in 32 of 33 previous appearances, and also finished in the top four of this year's tournament. Despite going 1-2 against teams that were ultimately the top three seeds in the playoffs, Lakeland managed to score enough points to earn the fourth spot in the single-elimination playoffs and won both afternoon games against teams they had already played in the morning to earn their first state championship.
- Due to the structure of the pre-determined schedule, Class 4 had four teams finish the preliminary rounds 3-0 against the other four teams that went 0-3, a first for the state tournament. This had the effect of determining the four teams that advanced to the single elimination playoffs after the second round, with the four 0-2 teams effectively eliminated and the four 2-0 teams playing for seeding in round 3. The 3-0 teams included three teams ranked in the top 76 of the most recent HSQBRank list of top teams that #103 ranked Washington played because of the pre-determined schedule. Each of the four playoff teams scored over 2000 points in the five games played throughout the day, likely the first time that has been accomplished by four teams in the same class in the same tournament.
