St. Johnsbury Academy is a private high school of about 950 students, serving day and boarding students. As its location, St. Johnsbury, Vt., has no public high school, most of the local high school students -- as well as many of those from several nearby towns -- attend SJA under school choice. St. Johnsbury's academic team competes in the Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl.

State tournament

St. Johnsbury is traditionally one of Vermont's strongest teams, and its three Scholars' Bowl titles are third most in league history. The Hilltoppers were especially successful in the 1990s, winning two state championships (1990 and 1994) and losing in the title game two other times (1995 and 1996). SJA also won the 2005 title, highlighting an eight-year span (1999-2006) that saw the Hilltoppers make it at least as far as the quarterfinals every season.

The dominant team in the Northeast Kingdom Region, St. Johnsbury has won eight titles -- including the last six in a row -- since Vermont introduced regional play in 2000.

National tournaments

St. Johnsbury competed in the Panasonic Academic Challenge after winning the 2005 Vermont Scholars' Bowl title. The Hilltoppers narrowly lost both their games, but Peter Golubock was named to the All-America team.
