Robert Sarvis was a member of the 1994 Thomas Jefferson team that won the Panasonic Academic Challenge.
In 2013 he was the Libertarian nominee for governor of Virginia, and in 2014 for a Virginia senate seat. In both elections, Sarvis polled more votes than the difference between the victorious Democratic candidate and the runner-up Republican. This makes him the second TJ quizbowl alum to alter the outcome of a statewide election in Virginia.
