General Information
Fairview High School is a 9-12 public high school in rural Cullman County, Alabama. Fairview is coached by Eric Vest. The quizbowl club president is Brett Hogan.
History
Fairview's first quiz bowl team was organized in 1981. The team acquired a vast amount of titles and trophies at area community college tournaments throughout the 1990s. Fairview won its ASCA district in 1993, but the team did not compete in ASCA tournaments again until February 2017.
Coaches
Dianne Bailey was the coach of Fairview's inaugural scholar's bowl team. Vicki Skelley maintained a long stint as the team's coach in recent years, but after her retirement in August 2014 coaching duties were thrown on Eric Vest, who at first showed an extreme disinterest in the role but later became receptive to A-team captain Brett Hogan's requests to give the team more opportunities to play. Thus, Fairview rivaled Lee Henry's dominant West Point teams in the years that followed.
Funding Incidents
Team captain Brett Hogan infamously started a GoFundMe campaign online in the spring and summer of 2016 to try and secure donations and support for the team. He went out and posted flyers at local grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, restaurants, and supermarket chains advertising the campaign along with the link, his phone number, and a plea for any help whatsoever. Unfortunately, they were to no avail. The campaign received only $10 from Brett Hogan's girlfriend before its deletion, which was due to its stagnation and the fact that most of the flyers were removed from each store within a week. However, Brett Hogan managed to tap other resources and the team received a flood of money for the next year.
Tournament Attendance
Currently, Fairview is for the most part only active in the low-level Cullman County Scholar Bowl, but it has attended Snead State Scholars Bowl in 2008 and 2010. The last time Fairview won the Cullman County Scholar Bowl was in 2008. However, the team has lately been attending most tournaments held in the immediate area due to the persistence and funding of team captain Brett Hogan.
Club Improvement and Return to Form
An extreme lack of good quizbowl ensued until from roughly the end of 2010 (which was Fairview's last Snead State Scholars Bowl attendance until 2017) until Brett Hogan became team captain around late 2015, and he convinced his coach and teammates to attend the second iteration of West Point Rainwater Invitational on 14 May 2016 as well as to begin competing at numerous tournaments outside of the county circuit, thus causing the team to improve drastically.
Fairview attended the aforementioned tournament with a team consisting of Brett Hogan, Ally Grund, and Tori Hall which had a dreadful performance and went 1-6 on the day but gained the invaluable experience of playing an actual NAQT-style invitational tournament. It was the first time that Fairview had competed outside Cullman County Scholar Bowl in over six years.
Brett Hogan hosted cram sessions at his house during the 2016-2017 academic year with top-scoring team members which further attributed to the team's rising force.
