Ryan's high school of Emmaus usually competed in a local Lehigh Valley league and on the WLVT Scholastic Scrimmage TV show. After discovering pyramidal quizbowl his Senior year, Ryan led Emmaus to a series of high finishes at Eastern PA tournaments, highlighted by an upset over Manheim Township to win the 2014 Henderson Invitational and winning the 2015 Eastern PA NAQT State Championship.
