After the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Region 1A West was a VHSL region in Class 1A, consisting of schools with less than 475 students lying generally in the western half of the state (though some teams in 1A East actually lied geographically further west than teams in 1A West). It contained Conference 45, 46, 47, and 48, and in essence (with a few exceptions) was a combination of about half of the former members of VHSL's Group A Regions C and D.
In each of the 4 years of 1A West's existence, its champion either finished as the VHSL 1A State Champion or the State Runner-Up.
Following the 2018 VHSL Realignment, Region 1A West will be split back up into regions 1C and 1D, creating similar (but smaller) versions of the former Group A Regions C and D.
Region 1A West Tournament Champions & Runners-Up
Conference ChampionsConferences had autonomy for selecting the seeds they sent to the regional tournament; thus the rules for qualifying varied. Ex. In Conference 47, the regular season champion gained the 1st seed ("Champion") in the 1A West Tournament, even if they did not finish in the Top 2 at the conference tournament, as was the case with Northwood in 2016. After the 2014-2015 Scholastic Bowl season, Clintwood High School consolidated with nearby Haysi High School to form the 2A school Ridgeview; as a result, Conferences 47 and 48 lost one member, but that same year, Patrick Henry (Glade Spring, VA) moved into Conference 47.
