Tiebreaker games are extra games used to resolve ties in the standings at a tournament.
If two teams are tied, a single game or "half game" is typically played. For situations involving more than two teams, multiple games or fractional games are necessary, with teams seeded into them using a statistic. NAQT has prepared schemes for resolving ties involving up to eight teams.
It is not always necessary to break a tie. Ties may be broken for advancement into playoffs or finals, to give out trophies that have been ordered in advance, or simply if the tournament director prefers to have a complete, unique ranking of the teams.
