General

Karsten Rynearson (9th, 2022) is a quiz bowl player for Greens Farms Academy, a school coached by Jon Matte and Katya Rynearson in Westport, Connecticut.

Notable Achievements

Karsten was named NAQT's MS Player of the Week for the week of January 6, 2018. He, Robert Muñiz, and Shiva Oswal hold 8 of the top 10 middle school tournament records, his being 2nd, 3rd, and 9th best. He was named an All-Star at the 2018 MSNCT. He finished third in the US Academic Bee in 2017, his first nationals appearance. In 2018, after Robert Muñiz won the Academic Bee, Karsten got second and Shiva Oswal finished 3rd. He also beat Robert Muñiz to win the National Humanities Bee, a buzzer competition on literature, mythology, fine arts, and music. Finally, playing solo in the bowl, he got 3rd overall after a 70 point loss to Midtown Classical in the semifinals. He was awarded a spot on the 2018 Middle School National A Team. At the 2018 International History Olympiad, he had the second most medals with 10, after winning the Pop and Classical Music Bees and getting second in the International History Bee, Women's History, and Overall Combined.

Teams

Karsten captained his team to a fifth-place finish at the 2018 MSNCT. He is also a member of his high school A team, which he led in scoring for the 2016-2017 academic year. He led them to a 7th place BHSAT finish and a second place finish at the Darien Invitational. He won SCOP Novice at Hunter solo against Maximilian Shatan (Bard High School), who came second at the 2018 IPNCT. He lead Team "New Yeticut" to a third place finish at the 2018 International History Bowl.
