Individual career

He is a four-time history bee national semifinalist, consecutively from 2015-2018. At the 2018 Middle School National History Bee championships, he finished 5th in the country in the 8th grade division, but narrowly missed out on reaching the final round (top four) after losing to Cooper Roh in the semis by 1 tossup. Perhaps his best overall individual performance came when he placed seventh in JV at the 2019 US History Bee, eliminating reigning ACE national champ Robert Muniz in the semifinals to advance to his first finals appearance in a major nationals event.

Up until 2020, he had won a SoCal regional championship in history bee every year since he began playing in 2015. At the 2016 ACE regional finals, after going down 7-3 with 6 tossups remaining, he won a close final against his former classmate at Fairmont Private School, Ameya Singh, by a score of 8-7 following a furious comeback. At 2018 regionals, he cleared the championship round by reaching 8 correct responses in 9 tossups. At the 2019 San Diego NHBB tournament, he bested Amogh Kulkarni by just one point to claim his fifth consecutive bee regional title. In 2020, however, Amogh defeated him at NHBB regionals, and he finished 3rd behind Kulkarni and fellow Arcadia player Ryan Sun.

Kang also won two consecutive national championships in the Sports & Entertainment Bee, in 2017 (ACE 7th grade division) & 2018 (high school JV, IAC/NHBB).

Despite his history experience, Nate only started to play general quizbowl as a freshman, in late 2018.
