At several trash tournaments and at least one academic tournament run by Boston-area teams Boston University and Boston College in the mid-2000s, each player could claim one of a set of "superpowers" at the start of the tournament. Players could use these abilities to alter the course of gameplay in various ways. This was part of a trend towards "fnn" rules alterations in trash tournaments that petered out around 2010.
