Perkins was recruited for [[Honaker]]'s team after he was scouted during [[Alex Zachwieja]]'s World Geography class in 8th grade. He had never participated in Quizbowl before, but had previous experience as a competitor in two National Spelling Bees, which he studied for using discipline that would later be applied to his Quizbowl career.

He would rotate between Honaker's A and B teams in the 2007-2008 Season before being part of a trio of 1000+ point scorers (in VHSL play) during his Junior year. Early on, Perkins developed using the [[McKenzie Method]]. During early years, his play was inconsistent. Some of his play even resulted in the occasional [[negstorm]]. As of recently, he started mixing in use of the [[Yaphe Method]], and in a tight spot resorts to standard [[lateral thinking]].
