Colonel By Secondary School (or simply CB for short) is a public school in Gloucester, Ontario, an eastern suburb of Ottawa. As the only English public school in the Ottawa area offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, Colonel By attracts bright students from across the city, giving the school a strong Quizbowl and Reach for the Top team.
Reach for the Top
Colonel By won its first city championship in 2005. It has remained a strong contender ever since, placing fourth at city regionals in 2012, and third in 2013. In 2014, Colonel By defeated Lisgar by 10 points in the final to claim the city championship.
Despite its participation in a bad Quizbowl format, Colonel By is a strong advocate for good, pyramidal Quizbowl. In the future, Colonel By intends to move away from Reach and focus entirely on good Quizbowl.
Quizbowl
Colonel By began attending quizbowl events starting in 2010. Presently, it is one of the few Canadian schools, along with Bell and Lisgar, that focus primarily on Quizbowl rather than Reach. Colonel By now attends almost every single nearby high school tournament, in addition to most nearby collegiate tournaments.
The team rose to prominence in the 2012-13 season, placing second and third at the 2013 NAQT Ontario Provincial Championship, with sophomores Ted Gan and Cameron Amini placing as the top two scorers. In the 2013-14 season, Colonel By broke into the top 50 of HSQBRank for the first time. At the 2014 Provincials, the team went 12-0 to win their first provincial Quizbowl title, with Cameron Amini finishing as the #1 scorer.
Under the leadership of Ted Gan and Cameron Amini, the 2013-2014 Colonel By team became the highest ranked Canadian high school team ever and has only improved in the 2014-2015 season. Colonel By won its first official collegiate tournament when the team won the Eastern Canada mirror of ACF Fall in 2014.
