VHSL Class 6A contains schools with the largest enrollment sizes that participate in VHSL Scholastic Bowl. 55 schools are part of Class 6A, and the class comprises schools with enrollments roughly over 1,927 students (barring exceptions which allow certain schools to play up or down). It was founded after the 2014 VHSL Realignment, which overhauled the VHSL classification system.

VHSL Class 6A consisted of VHSL Region 6A East and VHSL Region 6A West from 2014-2017. Teams qualified for the regional tournaments based on their rank within their new VHSL conference, unlike the old system, which used districts. Conferences often spanned wider geographical areas than districts, and teams did not necessarily have to play other teams in their conference until the beginning of the playoffs, instead opting to play their district regular season.
