Charlie Perkins is the current head coach at Honaker. Since beginning in the 2015-16 academic year the team has earned two consecutive VHSL state titles, in 2016 and 2017.
Playing career
Perkins was Honaker's captain in 2010, leading the team to its first of what would become three VHSL State Runner-Ups. In college, he played a semester or two for William and Mary.
Perkins still competes in the occasional open and trash tournament, often using the names of former high schools in middle Appalachia like "Big Creek"[1] for pseudonyms.
Coaching career
Perkins served as a Group Coordinator of the VHSL State Tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2015, and also as a timekeeper at the 2011 tournament.
Since 2016, he has been one of the coaches spearheading SWATA, which brought quizbowl tournaments to the geographically isolated and essentially quizbowl-less area of deep Southwestern Virginia.
