Nathaniel Kang (Class of 2022) is a high school player who currently captains St. Margaret's. Primarily a history specialist, he established the SMES program in 2018, as well as the school's history and quizbowl clubs. He has competed in NHBB competition for six years but only began playing general QB as a high school freshman.
Career
He is a four-time history bee national semifinalist, consecutively from 2015-2018. At 2018 middle school nats, he finished 5th in the country in the 8th grade division, but missed out on reaching the final round (top four) after narrowly losing to Cooper Roh in the semis. Perhaps his best overall individual performance came when he placed seventh in JV at the 2019 US History Bee, which marked his first finals appearance in a major nationals event.
Up until 2020, he'd won a SoCal regional championship in history bee every year since he began playing in 2015. At the 2016 ACE regional finals, he won a close final against Ameya Singh following a furious comeback. At the 2019 San Diego NHBB tournament, he bested Amogh Kulkarni by just one point to claim his fifth consecutive bee regional title. In 2020, however, Amogh soundly won the NHBB regional bee, and Nate finished 3rd behind Kulkarni and fellow Arcadia player Ryan Sun.
Kang also won two consecutive national championships in the Sports & Entertainment Bee, in 2017 (ACE 7th grade division) & 2018 (NHBB high school JV).
He began playing general quizbowl as a freshman, in 2018.
Personal
He runs cross country and track & field for St. Margaret's, but his favorite sport is baseball.
Studying
Kang has studied with and mentored his friend, Pegasus School player Max Razmjoo, for NHBB.
