James Monroe High School is located in Fredericksburg, VA and participates in VHSL Scholastic Bowl and Battle of the Brains.

In the mid-2000s James Monroe won two VHSL Scholastic Bowl state titles (2005 in the A division and 2009 after being bumped up to AA). JM also became a regular top-finishing team at BoB. In the 2008-2009 year, which was the final year of Bob Blackburn as coach and Chuhern Hwang's senior year on the team, JM had a brief run as a frequent participant & contender in Virginia and DC-area tournaments, culminating in a 12th-place finish at the 2009 NSC. This tied the 2004 Princess Anne team for the highest-ever finish at a modern national tournament by a Virginia team outside of Thomas Jefferson, Maggie Walker, and Western Albemarle's mid-2010s teams.

James Monroe also hosted the only edition of the MATT invitational tournament in May of 2009.

The team's only invitational appearance since 2010 was at TJIAT 2018, and they reached VHSL States again in 2019.

As of 2023, James Monroe is in the same VHSL region as William Monroe, meaning at least one tournament per year involves both teams. By convention, probably inherited from an older non-Scholastic Bowl tradition involving VHSL sports, "Monroe" by itself generally refers to this school and William Monroe is designated by its full name in events involving both schools.
