Prior to the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Region III was a VHSL region in class AA, consisting of schools with 700 to 1500 students lying from west of the Charlottesville area to the eastern part of the Roanoke area. It contained the Blue Ridge District, Seminole District, and Valley District. Like all VHSL regions, it sent two teams to the VHSL Scholastic Bowl state championship tournament for the sixteen-year duration of the original Scholastic Bowl tournament structure.

State tournament placement

Teams from Region III won the Class AA state tournament in 1999 (Blacksburg) and 2003 (Salem).

Teams from Region III finished second in the Class AA state tournament in 1998 (Blacksburg), 2001 (Heritage), 2002 (Blacksburg), 2006 (Blacksburg), 2007 (Heritage), and 2009 (Heritage).

Notes

Blacksburg won the Region III tournament in 1998 and 2006 and finished second in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005, representing the region at the state tournament in all eight years, before later moving to Region IV.

Salem won the Region III tournament in 2002 and 2003, representing the region at the state tournament in both years, before later moving to Region IV.

Appomattox finished second at the Region III tournament in 2006, representing the region at the state tournament, before moving down to Class A and joining Region B.

Cave Spring finished second at the Region III tournament in 2007, representing the region at the state tournament, before later moving to Region IV.
