VHSL Class 4A was a VHSL size classification that contained schools participating in VHSL Scholastic Bowl. 52 schools were part of Class 4A in 2017, and the class comprised schools with enrollments roughly between 1130 and 1450 students (barring exceptions which allowed certain schools to play up or down). It was founded after the 2014 VHSL Realignment, which overhauled the VHSL classification system. The class was renamed VHSL Class 4 in the 2018 VHSL Realignment.
VHSL Class 5A consisted of VHSL Region 4A North and VHSL Region 4A South from 2014-2015. After 2015, the regions were renamed VHSL Region 4A East and VHSL Region 4A West. 4A East mostly corresponded to 4A North and 4A West mostly corresponded to 4A South. Teams qualified for the regional tournaments based on their rank within their new VHSL conference, unlike the old system, which used districts. Conferences often spanned wider geographical areas than districts, and teams did not necessarily have to play other teams in their conference until the beginning of the playoffs, instead opting to play their district regular season.
