Charlie Perkins is the current head coach at Honaker. Since beginning in the 2015-16 academic year the team has earned three VHSL state championships (2016, 2017, 2019) and one VHSL state runner-up (2018).

Playing career

Perkins was Honaker's captain in 2010, leading the team to its first of what would become four VHSL State Runner-Ups. In college, he played a semester or two for William and Mary.

He also led a one-off unofficial Honaker team under the name of "Robert Zimmerman High School" at a 2010 NAREN mirror in Concord, NC. They finished in 4th place out of 14 teams in a field which included teams like Raleigh Charter and Dorman. The event marked one of Honaker's first quizbowl tournament appearances in a field with nationally-renowned programs.

Perkins still competes in the occasional open and trash tournament, often using the names of former high schools in middle Appalachia like "Big Creek"[1] for pseudonyms.

Coaching career

Perkins served as a Group Coordinator of the VHSL State Tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2015, and also as a timekeeper at the 2011 tournament. From 2008-2020, Perkins attended the VHSL State Tournament for 13 consecutive years as either a player, staffer, coach, or spectator (2014 only).

Since 2016, he has been one of the coaches spearheading SWATA, which brought quizbowl tournaments to the geographically isolated and essentially quizbowl-less area of deep Southwestern Virginia.
