The University of Illinois (Illinois) is a large public university located in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Illinois is represented in quizbowl by the University of Illinois Academic Buzzer Team (ABT), which was founded by Chris Goheen and others circa 1979 and is by some accounts the oldest continuously active registered student organization at Illinois.

In 2007, Illinois placed fifth at ACF Nationals, second in Division I at NAQT ICT, and eleventh in Division II at NAQT ICT.

Tournaments

Illinois traditionally hosts and produces two collegiate tournaments, Illinois Open (IO) and the Matt Cvijanovich Memorial Novice Tournament (MCMNT). Illinois Open (IO) is an open packet-submission tournament that usually features difficulty around ACF Regionals or a little harder. This year, it was edited by a team of intrepid ABT members led by Mike Sorice and coordinated by Trygve Meade, and won by Another Victim of the Manocentric Maleocracy (consisting of Jerry Vinokurov, Jonathan Magin, Eric Mukherjee, and Matt Weiner.) The Matt Cvijanovich Memorial Novice Tournament (MCMNT) is held in honor of Matt Cvijanovich. Open only to first- and second-year players, it requires packet submission and generally features difficulty around or a little easier than that of ACF Fall. Illinois also sometimes hosts ACF Regionals and NAQT Sectionals. Last year, Illinois hosted TRASH Regionals.

ABT also produces and hosts two annual high school tournaments, the Earlybird and ABT Solo. The Earlybird uses ACF-style questions and format, slightly modified to include part-by-part bonus rebounds and some computational math. This year's Earlybird was won by Detroit Catholic Central. The ABT Solo is a one-on-one tournament with short ACF-style questions. It is usually produced by Donald Taylor. Besides these, Illinois will host this year's NAQT Illinois State Championship and may continue hosting an NAQT tournament annually. Also, this year's MCMNT questions will be used on the east coast as part of DACQ's Weekend of Quizbowl. In most years, several other high school quizbowl or quizbowl-like events are held at Illinois, including the long-running Illinois Phi Scholars Tournament. ABT is not generally involved in these other tournaments.
