Season

The Academic Team finished off a very successful 2005-2006 season. The team participated in twenty-one tournaments in nine different states. The varsity team finished with an overall record of 148-15. They garnered thirteen tournament first place finishes and four second place finishes. The Junior Varsity team earned three JV tournament firsts and the Freshman team won two freshmen division tournament victories. The Freshman team also distinguished themselves on a nationwide computer tournament by scoring 1,686 points of a possible 2,000, the fifth highest score in the nation. Imdividual team members who distinguished themselves by earning individual MVP awards include Seniors Joel Knight and Nick Galea, Juniors Carl Thompson, Sophomore Joe Sheeran and Freshman Brett Harrison.

In April, the team won both of this year’s state championship titles. They defeated Grosse Pointe North High School in both state championship tournaments to bring home their eighth state championship in the last twelve years. For the second year in a row, senior and captain Joel Knight was named to the Michigan All-State Academic Team.

In June, the Varsity Academic team represented by seniors Joel Knight and Nick Galea, juniors Eric Muller, Tom Mathew, Carl Thompson, and John Cunningham traveled to Chicago, Illinois to compete in the NAQT National Tournament against a field of 128 different schools representing three countries and thirty-four states. Teams competing in this invitation-only tournament had distinguished themselves as the best teams from across the country. Catholic Central advanced to the semi-finals and finished the tournament in fourth place. Senior Joel Knight was named one of the tournament’s MVP’s.
