Jonathan Hess played for Irmo in South Carolina until he graduated in 2002. Jonathan had much success at the national level. He was the top scorer at the HSNCT in 2001 and 2002, becoming the first player to be leading overall scorer for the HSNCT twice, and the only player to do this prior to Adam Silverman (2010 & 2011).

At the 2001 tournament, Hess put up a statline of 13-80-10-76.83 in ten games for an Irmo team that finished in 15th place out of 40 teams with a record of 6-4. In 2002, Hess led his Irmo team to a second place finish at the HSNCT.

Chip Beall claimed that the team Jonathan captained was the greatest team he ever saw, as they won the NAC twice. The fact that 8th graders are allowed to play at NAC is known as the Jonathan Hess Rule.

He attended South Carolina, despite rumor that he went to Georgia Tech. There has been no record of Hess playing quiz bowl since. As of 2016, reports have him living in the Columbus, Ohio area.
