After the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Class 1A is one of six classes in VHSL Scholastic Bowl. It is defined as those schools with less than 475 students (barring exceptions which allowed certain schools to play up or down), and contains 54 total schools.

VHSL Class 1A consisted of VHSL Region 1A East and VHSL Region 1A West from 2014-2017. Teams qualified for the regional tournaments based on their rank within their new VHSL conference, unlike the old system, which used districts. Conferences often spanned wider geographical areas than districts, and teams did not necessarily have to play other teams in their conference until the beginning of the playoffs, instead opting to play their district regular season.

For a chronological listing of state tournament winners and runners-up, see the main VHSL Scholastic Bowl page.
