The first Stars 2000 National Academic Tournament was won by Irmo against a 17-team field, by defeating St. Joseph's 464-214 in the final. A $10,000 prize was awarded to the champion team, and the top four teams' schools received IBM computers.

Third place was Niceville from Florida, and fourth was Granville of Ohio.

Caldwell of Kentucky, the Panasonic champions Winston Churchill of Maryland, and Booker T. Washington also participated in this tournament.

Delta Airlines, IBM and Radisson Hotels were listed as sponsors.

428 teams were involved in the preliminary computer round, and the top 17 went to the Radisson in Lexington for regular matches to determine the champion on May 14, 1989.
