Charlie Perkins has been the Head Coach at Honaker since the 2015-16 academic year, guiding the team to two consecutive VHSL state titles in 2016 and 2017.
He played a semester or two for William and Mary and was Honaker's Captain in 2010, leading the team to its first of what would become three VHSL State Runner-Ups.
Also led a one-off unofficial Honaker team under the name of "Robert Zimmerman High School" at a 2010 NAREN mirror in Concord, NC. They finished in 4th place out of 14, a field which included teams like Raleigh Charter and Dorman.
Perkins still competes in the occasional open and trash tournament, often using the names of former high schools in middle Appalachia for pseudonyms.
He served as a Group Coordinator of the VHSL State Tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2015, and also as a timekeeper at the 2011 tournament.
Since 2016, he has been one of the coaches spearheading SWATA, which brought quizbowl tournaments to the geographically isolated and essentially quizbowl-less area of deep Southwestern Virginia. Within the first year of its existence, SWATA produced more than 10 qualifiers for NAQT SSNCT, HSNCT, and PACE NSC. Of those qualifiers, three teams attended SSNCT (Honaker, Tazewell, and George Wythe) and one attended HSNCT (Gate City).
