Cardinal Classic VIII
Cardinal Classic VIII was a tournament held at Stanford the weekend of February 14, 1998. The tournament was directed by Sarah Kline, and a total of 14 teams competed, 9 in Division I, and 5 in Division II (restricted to players of less than 2 years experience).
Division I Results
9 teams competed in a full round robin, after which the 9th place team (Georgia State) was shifted to Division II. Then the 8 remaining Division I teams did another round robin, after which the top four teams played a single-elimination final. In the semi-finals, St. Valentine's Day Massacre beat Berkeley A, and Berkeley B beat Vanderbilt. In the final, St. Valentine's Day Massacre (R. Hentzel, Eric Hillemann, Katy Beebe, Steve Jenkins) beat Berkeley B to win the Division I title. Vanderbilt was the highest ranked Division I team to consist solely of college players, so they were declared the College champion.
Division II Results
5 teams played a double round robin. After that, the teams were joined by Georgia State, which had finished last in the initial Division I round robin. Then, the 6 teams did another round robin, after which the top two teams were Berkeley C and BYU B. Berkeley C then defeated BYU B 215-200 in the one-game final to win the Division II title.
