Paul Gauthier is a player at the University of Chicago. He played for Wheaton North High School where he was the middle of the famed "La Fraternité Gauthier", following older brother Marc and preceding younger brother Greg. He then played for Vanderbilt as an undergraduate.

High School Career

Gauthier was a starter on all three of Wheaton North's state championship teams (2002, 2003, and 2004). He was the leading scorer on the 2004 team which finished 95-1, and is widely believed to be one of the best teams in Illinois history. For his part, he remains regarded as among the best high school players in Illinois history. In addition to his outstanding play, he was regarded for his lack of ego which earned him nearly universal respect and admiration among opposing players and coaches.

In 2002, he finished third at the New Trier Scobol Solo. In 2003, he won the tournament championship, becoming only the second player to finish in the top 3 twice.

In both 2003 and 2004, Gauthier was named First Team All-State by the coaches of the IHSSBCA. Only four players had been so honored before him.

Gauthier was selected for Team Illinois in both 2003 and 2004, helping lead the team to 3rd place at the 2004 PAC.

College Career

Gauthier played for Vanderbilt from 2004-2008.

He currently plays for the University of Chicago where he is working on a PhD in cuneiform studies.

Other Notable Things

Gauthier is known for his dislike of social science questions and his firm insistence that the Bogomil heresy should be removed from the canon. He supports a increase of the proportion of fine arts in quizbowl questions at the expense of literature.
