The 2011 Chicago Open was won by Machines Capable of Evil (Seth Teitler, Jeff Hoppes, Selene Koo, and Andrew Hart), who defeated Nothing Can Beat Science, Except Wesley Matthews (Matt Weiner, Matt Bollinger, John Lawrence, and Gautam Kandlikar) in the second match of an advantaged final, thus ending Matt Weiner's four-year winning streak at Chicago Open. The trio of Seth, Jeff, and Selene would reunite to win another CO two years later.

The tournament was head-edited by Ryan Westbrook, with SteveJon Guth and Mia Nussbaum editing science and auditory arts respectively. The set was widely praised, even by vociferous opponents of Ryan's editing philosophy, such as Ted Gioia, who said it "should be held up as a paradigm for all future COs." The first finals packet has sometimes been called the hardest quizbowl packet written up to that point, which favored Nothing Can Beat Science, Except Wesley Matthews. However, the second finals packet was pitched at a saner difficulty.

In the aftermath of the tournament, Andrew Hart unveiled a series of PATH-based measures for individual stats he devised, including one that attempts to measure how much better any player is than the average person in their scoring role (e.g. fourth scorer).
