Josh Rutsky is a co-founder of Qwiz. He has served as President of the Alabama Scholastic Competition Association and was the longtime coach of Hoover.
In 2015, he was awarded the Cooper Award for his efforts encouraging "good quizbowl" practices in Alabama, including running the entire ASCA state series on pyramidal questions.
On a personal level, Joshua Rutsky is known by all those who know him as one of the most selfless and standup men they've met. On College Jeopardy!, Duke student Anna Muthalaly called Josh her inspiration and said he was the "best QB coach in the Southeast" who "gave me every important pep talk I've ever had in my whole life."[1]
Coaching
Rutsky was a very successful coach at Hoover, where he led the team to four straight NAQT Alabama Championships from 2009 to 2012, several ASCA High School State Championships, and 17th place at the 2009 HSNCT. Under Rutsky's direction, Hoover also hosted many successful editions of the Hoover Invitational, which grew into one of the largest quizbowl events in the Southeast and attracted a significant number of out-of-state teams to play the best teams in Alabama.
ASCA
One of his signature efforts as a coach was getting the Scholars Bowl team on equal footing (and funding) with athletics teams, including the reward of school-wide pep rallies for winning state championships. [1]
In large part due to Rutsky's efforts, Alabama earned top marks in Chris Chiego's 2015 State of the States report.
Qwiz
Since 2019, Rutsky has been the curriculum director at Qwiz, determining course offerings at summer camps and at Qwiz Academy and producing the Qwiz5 study guides. Rutsky is also the program director of the National Quizbowl Conference.
